Community Grant Awards The Minneapolis Foundation and our funding partners awarded the following Community Grants between February 2006 and August 2006. Systems and Policy Change Grants The following grants were made for systems and policy change activities within the Foundation's four funding goal areas:
African American Action Committee of Brooklyn Park (no web site) $100,000 A two-year grant for general support for a start-up, grassroots, community-based, policy-advocacy organization working in northwestern suburban communities of the Twin Cities African Development Center of Minnesota $150,000 A two-year grant for general support for a community development corporation that seeks social change by empowering African immigrants/refugees to become economically self-sufficient $75,000 A two-year grant for facilitating and tracking community implementation of Community Benefit Agreements as a policy change to close gaps in racial disparities and promote economic justice City of Lakes Community Land Trust $100,000 A two-year grant for a policy and advocacy project to increase investments in perpetually affordable home-ownership options to help close the racial disparity in home-ownership rates in Minneapolis $75,000 Activities of a public interest law center dedicated to preserving family farms Headwaters Foundation for Justice $100,000 A two-year grant for capacity-building activities that focus on social justice organizations, particularly those in Greater Minnesota Hispanic Chamber of Commerce of Minnesota $50,000 General support for an emerging Latino organization seeking to provide economic opportunities for Latinos in Minnesota Immigrant Law Center of Minnesota $93,000 A two-year grant for research, public education, and advocacy addressing immigration policy Metropolitan Area Agency on Aging $126,000 A two-year grant for the Sustaining Minority Elders in Their Communities initiative, to assess and develop the capacity of culturally-specific, community-based organizations to provide elder-care services Metropolitan Economic Development Association $75,000 General support of the organization's ongoing activities to assist minority entrepreneurs Minneapolis Children's Advocacy Network (no web site) $75,000 Public education and voter engagement activities in Minneapolis to highlight local candidate positions on policies that affect the health, education, and well-being of children Minneapolis Community and Technical College $250,000 A two-year grant for the Power of You program, to make the first two years of college available tuition-free for graduates of Minneapolis or St. Paul public high schools, charter schools, or alternative schools, as well as for residents of those two cities Minneapolis Consortium of Community Developers $180,000 A two-year grant for general support for a membership organization which represents and strengthens community-based, nonprofit housing and business developers in the Twin Cities Minnesota Advocates for Human Rights $150,000 A two-year grant for advocacy for human rights policy, public education, and activism to promote full implementation of human rights conventions in Minnesota Neighborhood Health Care Network $125,000 Piloting and evaluating the Community Care Network, a new model of treatment and coordination of care for people who have chronic conditions but are uninsured or underinsured Northside Residents Redevelopment Council $90,000 A two-year grant for developing community input for the design and implementation of Community Benefits Agreements responsive to the needs and interests of North Minneapolis residents Resource Center of the Americas $60,000 Activities to organize, conduct media campaigns, and lobby elected officials on policy issues affecting immigrant rights and globalization $50,000 A two-year grant for the Fund for Innovations in Human Development, an endowment drive to generate 10% of the organization's annual operating expenses $50,000 The Parks for People project, designed to assist residents of core city neighborhoods develop and/or maintain green space $100,000 Development of a pre-program for particularly difficult-to-employ populations, with an emphasis on young African American men with felony records, including opening a new location in North Minneapolis $125,000 A two-year grant for policy advocacy on behalf of neighborhood, small business, and community groups and implementation of a new University Avenue Community Planning Center $90,000 A three-year grant for Twin Cities Tomorrow, a project to track significant trends affecting the health and vitality of the region and to foster public policy initiatives driven by the data Capital Grants The following grants were made for capital expenses. Capital grants are awarded only to Twin Cities metro area organizations. Cedar Riverside People's Center ( no web site) $57,000 Remodeling and expanding the CRPC Community Health Center $250,000 The "Next Standard" capital campaign: $200,000 in capital support (construction) and $50,000 in programmatic support (Public Insight Journalism and The Forum)
